Uploading to FreePages with WS_FTP
WS_FTP LE is one of the most widely used FTP products. This program is not Shareware. Rather, it is distributed free of charge to non-commercial home users, students and faculty of educational institutions and government employees. All others must buy WS_FTP Pro. You can download WS_FTP LE from http://www.ipswitch.com/ or from various Shareware and Freeware repostories on the Internet. The example provided here was created using Version 4.60, the appearance of the panels may be different in other versions of the product.

The Session Properties panel was opened by clicking on the
button and then filling in the information from your welcome letter.
Since your password is case sensitive and may be hard to remember, you
can use cut/copy and paste from your e-mail program to make sure that you
don't mistype it. Be sure to check the Save Pwd option so
WS_FTP won't have to prompt you for your password the next time you want
to upload files. Click on the
button to start the login. (You will need to be connected to the
Internet, so dial in first.)

The files on your own computer appear in the left-hand window (labelled Local System) and the files on FreePages appear in the right-hand window (labelled Remote System). Note that your account is preloaded with a number of directories (folders) -- one for each of the RootsWeb Communities, in fact. If additional Communities are created, you'll find extra directories in your FreePages account. Note that when the window is too narrow to show the entire file or directory name, WS_FTP displays a tilde (~) to indicate that the file name is incomplete. All of the directories on Freepages end in _html.
You must be in one of these directories before you can upload files; uploading into the account root directory is forbidden. I selected the crafts_html directory and opened it by double-clicking the name of the directory in the FreePages side of the window.

There are two files in my crafts_html directory, gpage.html and index.html
-- note that the current directory name is displayed in the window headers.
To upload a file to FreePages, select it from the list of files on your
computer, then click the
upload button. You'll want to make sure that your web pages are uploaded
as ASCII and your image and sound files are uploaded as binary
