How to set up

  • open your program up and it will have a "Session Properties" screen
  • Click on the "New" button to clear the boxes and set up a new profile.
  • In the "Profile Name" box, enter a name you will remember (usually your county name).
  • In the "Host Name /Address" box add the url for the computer you will connect with
    1. On Rootsweb this is:
      • "users.rootsweb.com", for the USGW Counties.
      • "users.freepages.rootsweb.com", for the Freepages accounts.
      • "homepages.rootsweb.com", for the paid for space.
    2. On Crosswinds this is"ftp.crosswinds.net".
    3. On AOL this is "members.aol.com".
    4. On Fortune City this is "ftp.fortunecity.com".
  • In the "Host Type" box use the drop down menu to locate "UNIX (standard)".
  • In the "User ID" box enter the site Id you are given when you set up your account.
    1. On Rootsweb:
      • for the USGW this is usually your state abrevation &county name.
        ie: "coarapah" or "cofremon".
      • For the Freepages and Hompages this is usually the account name you selected when you signed up.
    2. On Crosswinds this is your email account name.
    3. On AOL this is your member ID.
    4. On Fortune City this is assigned when you set up your account.
  • In the "Password" box enter the password that is given you when you set up your account. These are always Case Sensitive! It is a good idea to copy and paste.
    * Note: for an AOL account this will also be your sign on password you use when you sign on the internet.
  • Check the box next to the "Password" box labled "Save Pwd", this is a great time saver to keep you from entering your password over and over. Your Session Profile should look almost like this one .

  • Now you can Click the "OK" button and Connect .
  • On Rootsweb:
    • the USGW Counties, you will see three Directories.
      1. pubilc_html
      2. archive_ftp
      3. archive_html

      You will need to dubble click on the "public_html" to enter it.
      This is where you need to upload to allow the public to see your pages. Any files uploaded outside of this will not be viewd by the public.
    • For the Freepages Accounts you will see the Communities:

    You will need to select the community directory you wish to use for the type page you have created. I have placed this page in the computers_html directory.

    When you try to view your pages the url will be slighly differant for each directory you add pages to.

    for a page in the computers_html, it will be like mine: "http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~ccmahoni/" To Make Folders (Directories).

    1. Click on the "MkDir" button on the Left or "Local System" side for your computer.
      On the Right or "Remote System" side for the computer you will be uploading pages to.
    2. Enter the name you want for your new Directory in the Pop up .
    3. Click "OK"

    To Move to a new drive on your computer

    1. Click on the "ChgDir" button on the Left or "Local System" side for your computer.
    2. Enter the Drive Letter for your Directory in the Pop up .
    3. Click "OK", the new drive should be showing in the box across the top of the "Local System" side.

    Uploading and Downloading

    1. Connect to the site you will be working on.
    2. Higlight the file you want to download on the "Remote Directory side of the program.
      1. Click on the top arrow in the middle that points to the left or "Local System" side, to Download.
      2. Click on the bottom arrow in the middle that points to the right or "Remote System" side to upload.
    3. A pop up "Transfer Status" Window will show how fast your file is being transferd and when it is compleet.
    4. You can highlight Several files together to upload faster. They have to be next to each other with no gaps to do this.
    5. Click on the button that says "Close" to disconnect. The button will now say "Connect"
    6. Click on the "Exit" button at the bottom or the X in the top left to close the program.
    Other Options
    1. "View" - allows you to view the source code of the hightlighted file.
    2. "Exec" - allows you to exicute and see the file in your browser.
    3. "Rename" -allows you to change the name of a file or Directory.
    4. "Delete" -allows you to delete a file you no longer need.
    5. "Refresh" -allows you to update the directory you are using.
    6. "DirInfo" -allows you to see a text view of the contents of the directory.
